The motto of St. Petersburg International Economic Forum held on June 2-5, 2021 sounds life-affirming: “Together again. Economics of the New Reality”.
It is not for the first time that we have been involved in this unique event in the world of economics and business held under the patronage and with the participation of the President of the Russian Federation. This year the Group has been represented by Francesco Starace, CEO and General Manager of Enel S.p.A., Simone Mori, Enel Group’s Head of Europe, Stephane Zweguintzow, General Director of Enel Russia.
What events were hosted at SPIEF?
SPIEF-2021 played host for many unique and significant events. We dwell on those we were involved into.

“Business Dialogue. Russia-Italy” Session
At this session that is very significant for us Francesco Starace noted that currently the most important approach of the company is a trend towards decarbonization and modernization of gas power plants to increase their efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions focusing on the Enel Russia’s existing renewable energy projects.
It is a great honor that the head of Enel thanked employees of the Group in Russia highlighting their important contribution to the implementation of projects in the challenging 2020.
“Russia-EU Relations: Responding to the Challenges of time” Session
on the impact of the new technological solutions and progress on reaching the sustainable development goals.
Simone Mori, Enel Group’s Head of Europe, emphasized the importance of Enel's strategic goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the coming years, so that 70% of the Group's electricity should be generated from the renewables.
About the SPIEF in brief
Now we all witness a transition to the green energy.
And our company is doing its best to accelerate it. Two Enel Russia’s wind farms are under construction now: in Murmansk region and Stavropol region. On May 1 our Azov wind farm, the first wind farm of Enel Group in Russia, started supplying clean electricity to the wholesale market.
In his speech at SPIEF-2021 CEO and General Manager of Enel S.p.A. Francesco Starace emphasized that Enel is the largest investor in the energy sector in Russia.
Pavel Snikkars, Russian Deputy Minister of Energy and Simone Mori, Enel Group’s Head of Europe, discussed the company's business in Russia and the prospects for cooperation:
“We welcome all investors in the Russian electricity market and support the implementation of investment projects, including by international companies. In addition to traditional generation, Enel is actively working in the Russian renewables segment, and we look forward to further productive cooperation.”
An open approach of business towards changes is the key for a successful transition to green energy
The creation of green alternatives is especially important for Russia because it will accelerate decarbonization.
“Russia is rich not only with underground energy resources, but also has an infinite potential in terms of wind and sun - it is a huge fantastic country. For example, the opportunity to produce “green” hydrogen will become a new frontier for the energy sector.”
One step ahead
As one of the leaders of energy transition, we are expecting new discoveries and achievements.
Survey work is already underway in several regions of the country to assess the potential for the construction of new renewable power plants.
The most important approach of Enel Russia is Open Energy. We develop and apply state-of-the-art technologies, support start-ups and innovation, and are always ready to cooperate to find new forms of energy to create an even more sustainable world.
