Looking up we see a blue endless sky. We humans are used to enjoying sunny, cloudless days and do not feel the mortal threat to health that ultraviolet rays conceal.
Now they are absorbed by the ozone layer, that protects all living matter on our planet. Unfortunately, it is being destroyed by the impact of human activity.
If the ozone layer continues to disintegrate, a disaster might happen. Most plants and microorganisms will die. People and animals will get burns after staying in the sun for only a few minutes. The surface of the Earth will heat up more and more, which will cause global climate change. The entire ecosystem of planet Earth will be destroyed.
The ozone layer is invisible and cannot be touched or tasted, but its significance for the preservation of life on Earth is truly great. Our duty is to keep it intact.
Caring for the world at the company level and by each of us
The UN declared September 16th as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. For more than 35 years, all countries of the world are united in solving such a significant problem, and Enel Russia does not stand aside.
We comply with all applicable requirements for the protection of the ozone layer: we keep records of ODS (Ozone-Depleting Substances) and products containing them and used on our production branches; we provide reports on the use of ODS; we prohibit the use of products containing ODS, and ODS themselves, the consumption of which is prohibited; we are going through a systematic transition to the use of equipment that does not contain ODS.
Our employees also make their personal contribution to the preservation of the ozone layer. We call on every inhabitant of the planet to think and to be committed to take actions that will help to preserve the ozone layer.
- Reduce the use of ozone-depleting substances. Do not buy aerosol products containing chlorofluorocarbons!
- Repair refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners immediately, without delay if there is any sign of malfunction.
- Consider buying new refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners that do not contain freon gas or other chlorofluorocarbons.
Our actions today are a contribution to a healthy and meaningful future
More than 30 years ago, the Montreal Protocol was signed in order to protect the ozone layer by phasing out some of the chemicals that deplete it. Until now it has been ratified by all 197 UN member states.
If the countries that have signed the protocol continue to abide by it in the future, then we can hope that the ozone layer will fully recover by 2050!
A healthy and happy life for future generations is the result of our current actions, our care and responsible behavior.
