Every person living on Earth strives for well-being and prosperity. Unfortunately, we often forget to take care of our home - planet Earth. Plus, the society development has never been even which leads to environmental and social issues. This is why it is important to support sustainable development, which implies that economic growth and technical progress will not be detrimental for environment and people will be confident about their future.

On September 25, 2015 the UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It comprises 17 goals among which there are elimination of poverty, zero hunger, gender equality and urgent measures to curb climate change. With joint effort of governments, business and individuals it is planned to solve problems of the humanity.

Business and sustainable development are inseparable

Business is the major driver for economic growth and, therefore, it is inextricably bound up with sustainable development. It is reflected in the way a company solves environmental and social issues:  environmental impact, employment rate, health, safety and social welfare, human rights, etc. Not only business can have an effect on sustainable development of the city or region where it operates, but it also should be guided by local community needs and interests when pursuing of its business tasks. Sustainable business is a business which can survive and effectively perform in a long term prospective, and that’s why successful companies have already started to build their activities in accordance with the sustainable development principlesand the UN respective goals.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals in Enel

Thus, as early as in 2015 the Enel Group was among the first ones to declare its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and also to make a tangible contribution into implementation of 4 of them, namely the following:

  • Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education (SDG No.4);

  • Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all (SDG No.7);

  • Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (SGD No.8);

  • Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (SDG No.13);

“Power generation is the foundation for economic and social development, which stimulates production, creates jobs, makes education and healthcare better and creates new growth opportunities. The core of the Enel corporate culture is sustainable development because we believe that being sustainable today means to be competitive tomorrow. Environmental responsibility and social and economic sustainability are the key aspects of growth in power sector”

– Francesco Starace, Enel Group CEO

Everyone can contribute

Sustainable development begins from individual commitment of everyone. We ourselves can make the world better. No need to do exceptional things. Begin with something simple, which can be easily added to your daily duties.

Here are a couple of examples:

  • Switch the lights off as you leave the room and use light motion sensors where possible

  • Use household energy-saving bulbs only

  • Don’t litter the streets

  • Try to separate waste, if possible, to recycle paper, glass and plastic

  • Try to avoid plastic containers, take an eco bag with you when going for shopping

Making these small but sure steps we will approach the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

Are you ready to make this world better, cleaner and safer? Do you now where to start? Test yourself and answer a couple of questions. Shall we start?
