Enel pays great attention to the preservation of our environment. We strive to reduce the volume of polluting emissions and are engaged in environmental protection projects. Our Company operates in accordance with the applicable legislation. Natural resources are used in compliance with the agreed limits.
In 2009, we developed and adopted the Health, Safety and Environment Policy of our Company based on the principles of environmental safety and rational use of natural resources. This document outlines the Company’s policy to permanently improve its environmental performance and comply with international standards. With this in mind, we performed a detailed analysis of all available technologies to reduce pollutants emissions and developed solutions to implement them on our power plants.
We have developed a technical refurbishment and reconstruction program of our power plant equipment based on the implementation of environmentally clean technologies. A number of technological process with high efficiency fuel combustion and reliability of equipment are being installed to reduce polluting emissions. We are replacing some electrostatic precipitators with more advanced fabric filters with a higher yield (up to 99%) on Reftinskaya GRES.
To reduce ash emissions at Reftinskaya GRES, we implemented the following measures:
Quality and timely repair of existing electrostatic precipitators to ensure higher flue gas purification
Optimization of coal combustion
On three out of ten power units, inefficient electrostatic precipitators were replaced with new fabric filters having a high purification degree of up to 99.9%
Gas cleaning plants on power unit No.6 were replaced in 2007-2009 with modern electrostatic precipitators within the framework of the investment and environmental program.
Together with the new electrostatic precipitators, we commissioned a first-of-a-kind dry ash removal and transportation system, which allows us to:
Reduce the volume of water consumed for ash transportation and storage
Use the capacity of ash disposal area No.2 and save hundreds of hectares of forest from cutting
Utilise ash as raw material for the construction industry
Ship up to 1 million tons of ash per year for its utilisation by other industries
Due to maintenance and operation activities aimed at improvement of the equipment environmental efficiency, the average degree of flue gas cleaning at the power plant is 98.0%.
Three-stage gas and fuel oil burning chambers with low-toxic burners are in operation at Nevinnomysskaya GRES and Sredneuralskaya GRES. As a result, the concentration of nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases from our CCGTs is as low as 50 mg/nm3.

By taking these actions, we are able to improve our environmental impact, and to address emergency situations.
